SCOPE AND SERVICE

The Division of Urology currently has 4 specialist urologists and 4 higher surgical trainees in rotation. It provides a comprehensive urology service to the public as well as being a tertiary referral centre on a territory-wide basis. Most major operations are done in Queen Mary Hopsital whereas most endourological operations are performed in Tung Wah Hospital. Both centres are fully accredited training centres for advanced urology training by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong with a training capacity of 4 advanced urology trainees. Highlights on areas of special interest are given in the following sections.

1. GENERAL UROLOGY

  1. Haematuria
  2. The Division of Urology together with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology runs a day case diagnostic haematuria clinic where patients with gross haematuria are provided a one stop service for prompt diagnosis and management.

  3. Benign prostatic hyperplasia
  4. Management of BPH represents the main bulk of workload of the Division and ongoing clinical trials are being conducted to further improve the service and treatment outcome.

2. STONE SURGERY

The Jockey Club Lithotripsy Unit was established in June 1991 where patients with renal and ureteric stones are treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. It also provides ESWL service to patients from several other Hospital Authority Hospitals.

Special interest is also given to the field of endourological treatment of urinary tract calculi. Excellent results had been reported by the Division in international literature on treatment of ureteric calculi with ureterorenoscopic laser lithotripsy. More than 60% of patients with ureteric calculi are treated by URSL in Tung Wah Hospital as day patients with over 90% success rate.

The first renal unit in Hong Kong was established in late 60s in QMH under the care of Department of Surgery and first renal transplant operation in Hong Kong was performed in QMH in 1970. Currently, QMH is a regional renal transplantation centre. The Division of Urology and the Nephrology Division of the Department of Medicine have been integrated to provide a combined renal transplantation (both cadaveric and living related programmes) and dialysis service.

4. UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY

The Division of Urology provides comprehensive surgical management of all cancers of the urinary tract. In addition a biweekly uro-oncology conference is held with the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology for joint patient care.

6. MALE INFERTILITY / IMPOTENCE

  1. Male infertility

The Division of Urology takes part in one of the biggest assisted reproduction programme in Hong Kong organized by the Division of Reproductive Medicine of the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. An average of 500 assisted reproduction treatment cycles are initiated every year, of which about 60 cycles will necessitate surgical sperm retrieval.

  2. Erectile Dysfunction*

Special clinics are held at the QMH Specialist Clinic for comprehensive assessment of patient for erectile dysfunction. An injection pharmacotherapy programme is established for patient resistant to medical therapy. In collaboration with the Department of Radiology, Doppler studies, cavernosometry and cavernosography service are provided for vasculogenic impotence.

7. MINIMAL INVASIVE AND ROBOTIC ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPIC UROLOGY

The Division of Urology is experienced in performing highly specialized Minimally Invasive urology procedures including Laparoscopic and Robotic Assisted laparoscopic urology operations.

Procedures including nephrectomy, partial npehrectomy, pyeloplasty, cystectomy prostatectomy etc, could be performed either by laparoscopic or robotic assisted laparoscopic approach.
