This is a two-day course held every year for surgeons interested in Head and Neck Surgery. The emphasis is on both the practical aspect and the theoretical basis of therapy. The theme for Head and Neck Course 2009 is ‘Neck Mass’.

Neck mass is a common presentation of patients suffering from a wide variety of head and neck pathologies. The pathologies of neck mass may be benign or malignant or they represent metastatic lesions from a primary cancer in the upper aerodigestive tract. They are seen in children as well as in adults. The optimal management of neck mass depends on the exact nature of these lesions. A wide range of investigatory procedures can be carried out to ascertain the diagnosis and the order of performing these investigations is debatable.

For benign lesions, the surgical approach of management varies with the age of the patient, location and the pathological nature of the mass. For malignant neck mass, the choice among radiation, surgery or multidisciplinary approach remains a challenge for the physician. The reconstruction aspect following resection is another problem and the Head and Neck Course 2009, attempts to address all these issues.

We have scheduled a patient suffering from neck mass for live surgery demonstration on Day 2 of the Course to illustrate the concept and procedure. Special focus will be placed on surgical techniques of resection and reconstruction, the entire procedure will be demonstrated through direct video transmission from the operation theatre to the lecture hall emphasising the practical details and technical aspects.

The experience of the Head and Neck Division of the Department of Surgery, University of Hong Kong Medical Centre, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, in the management of pathologies in the neck over the past 20 years will be presented. The contributions of nursing staff, pathologists, radiologists and clinical oncologists towards the management of these patients will also be included. Throughout the Course, ample time will be allowed for discussion. It is our hope that through lectures, videos and live surgery demonstration, participants will master the current concepts of management of neck mass.
