An agreement was signed between the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.  An agreement was signed between the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFA), United Kingdom, to accredit the BSc(ActuarSc) programme for IFA subjects CT1 ¡V CT8, with effect from 5 September 2011. According to Dr. Trevor Watkins, Director of Education at IFA, the BSc(ActuarSc) programme is the first in Asia obtaining such accreditation from the institution.

QS World University Ranking. For the subject of Statistics, HKU was ranked 26th world-wide, at the top of all HK institutions.  HKU was ranked no.1 in Asia and 22nd in the world in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2011; see also reports in media: WenWei Pao and QQ Education. This year, QS also provides the world rankings by subjects for the first time. For the subject of Statistics, HKU was ranked 26th world-wide, at the top of all HK institutions. This rank is the 5th highest in all subjects among all HK institutions; see the summary table.

Mr. Patrick Sun-Cheong Poon  The Department is deeply grateful to Mr. Patrick Sun-Cheong Poon for his great generosity in making donations to continue the Patrick Poon Lecture Series in Actuarial Science which was established in 2004, to have established the endowed Patrick S C Poon Professorship in Statistics and Actuarial Science, and to launch the Patrick S C Poon Scholarship scheme of up to ten awards per cohort of actuarial science students this year.
