The Department of Philosophy teaches undergraduate students
from various faculties, including Arts, Social Science,
Engineering and Science. The aim is to provide students with a
good understanding of basic philosophical issues, and to improve
their critical thinking skills and language abilities. Enrolment in
philosophy courses reaches around 1000 each year.

- Professor Kwong-loi Shun. Chair Professor of Philosophy at Chinese University of Hong Kong. Former Vice-President and Principal of the University of Toronto at Scarborough.
- Terence Chang, now Headmaster of Diocesan Boys' School, studied Philosophy and Comparative Literature at HKU.
- Charles Chau, Executive vice president of strategy and research as well as managing director for North Asia, MTV Networks.
