Q. What is the 2-week summer course like? Can I participate in just the internship component or just the summer course component?
Participants must be present for the entire period of the program. If participants are only interested in joining the Summer Course, we encourage you to contact the course coordinator and apply specifically to that course.  The summer course is a 2-week credit-bearing course that prepares you ahead for your internship to have a basic understanding about Asia and issues related to Asia.
Q. Can I choose the internship placement? What if I do not like the company that has been assigned to me?
Internship placements for participants are arranged by the LLIC Program Office. Applicants are asked to indicate their industry preferences and city preferences on their application and can request to be considered for a particular company but there are no guarantees. We encourage applicants to be as open as possible to different internship placements. If an applicant does not like the company that has been offered, the Program Office will not be able to make any changes and the internship placement will be offered to another applicant.
Q. Do I need a visa to Hong Kong and/or China? How do I get my visa?
The LLIC Program will help all participants acquire a visa for the program unless otherwise noted. Participants will need to bear the cost of the visa and are responsible for providing the necessary documents to procure a visa.
Q. Do I need to speak Chinese to be eligible for the internships? Will my chances of being selected for an internship be diminished if I am a freshman or have less experience?
No and no. Many of the companies are international organizations that operate in English and do not require interns to speak, read or write Chinese. Some companies do require that applicants have some proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and these companies are indicated on the application. Companies have their own selection criteria for interns but in the past, we have seen younger applicants apply and participate in the program. We encourage applicants from all different academic backgrounds to apply.
Q. Where do we live for the 7-week internship component? Do we need to arrange accommodation for ourselves?
For both interns in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the accommodation will be arranged by the LLIC Program and overseas participants will need to pay for their own accommodation. In both cities, accommodation will either be on University campus dormitories (2 students to a room unless there are other requests), hotels or rented flats. More information about accommodation will be updated soon.
Q. Are the internships paid?
Some of the internships provide a stipend while some (usually the non-profits) are unable to provide a stipend to students. While interning for free for the summer may seem like a big sacrifice for many students, think of the experience that will be gained! Former LLIC participants were taken on trips around China, participated in high-level business meetings, and accompanied representatives to company dinners. We encourage students to be creative in exploring funding opportunities if the internship is unable to provide you with a stipend for the summer.
