Associate Professor
Background:
The Stanley Ho Exercise & sports Science Laboratory (SHESSL) was established in 1990 as a result of the need for a specialised laboratory to meet expanding teaching and research requirements in the Sports Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. A very generous donation from Dr Stanley Ho helped to construct the existing laboratory facility which bears his name. Subsequent funding form the UGC and the University of Hong Kong have equipped this Laboratory with an extensive array of some of the most modern and sophisticated sports science equipment available in Asia.

Equipment includes specialist items for:
  • Heart rate (by 3-lead ECG and telemetry) - (Polar Team System, Polar S810, Polar Sport Tester)
  • 3-dimensional body motion/movement (accelerometry) - (Stayhealthy RT3, Tritrac)
  • 1-dimensional body motion/movement (accelerometry) – MT1 (Actigraph)
  • Ergometry ( Monark 8 28E and 817E friction-braked - multiple units of each , Rodby / Lode / Quinton electromagnetically-braked; Concept II rower; Quinton Q65 & Powerjog M30 treadmills; Rodby arm-crank ergometers)
  • Manual gas analysis (Douglas bags, Cosmed Pony spirometers, AEI S-3A O2 and CD-3A CO2 analysers etc)
  • Automated/computerised gas analysis - multiple units - (Quinton Q-plex I, Fitco, Sensormedics 2900, Jaeger Oxycon Pro)
  • Portable automated/computerised gas analysis using remote telemetry - (Aerosport KB1-C, Cortex MetaMax 3B)
  • Anthropometric measurement - (Rosscraft) multiple units of each
  • Blood pressure (sphygmomanometry) automated and manual - multiple sets of each
  • Blood lactate analysis - (YSI 1500 Sport, Accusport, Arkray Lactate Pro)
  • Manual isometric strength measurement
  • Fully computerised isokinetic/isotonic/isometric strength testing/rehabilitation (Biodex System 2AP)
  • Advanced thermoregulation/temperature measurement (multiple sites) - (YSI 2100, Grant Squirrel 1256)
  • Advanced computerised fast 8-channel analog-to-digital data collection system (MacLab 8s system)
  • Automated gas-analysis verification system (MedGraphics/Vacumed)
  • Specialized psychomotor learning and testing equipment (multiple sets)
  • Extensive array of anatomical models (SOMSO), bones, joints, organs - multiple sets.
  • Fully networked computer system (PC and Macintosh; desktops and laptops)
  • Multimedia production (colour scanner/colour printer/digital camera and video)
  • Multimedia projection systems (LCD projectors/panels - Proxima, InFocus, Sharp, Panasonic systems)
  • Access to IHP computer laboratory (12 networked machines using 10-BaseT, specialist file-server, ADAM CD-ROMS, AV-screens)

Teaching Programmes and typical laboratories work done in SHESSL:

B.Sc. in Exercise and Health
  • Anatomy and Physiology I : the musculo-skeletal system.
  • Psychological Aspects of Motor Learning and Performance : self-testing of psychomotor capacities ; variables affecting psychomotor perforamnce OR test yourself with these on-line tests from University of Washington : reaction time, hit-the-dot, colourful reaction time and short-term memory.
  • Exercise Physiology: respiratory responses to exercise ; cardiovascular responses to exercise: Douglas Bag determination of VO2 at rest and exercise ; heart rate, VO2 and lactate in exercise.
  • Advanced Exercise Physiology: Wingate, PWC170 and Astrand tests of performance ; VO2 max test using "on-line" gas analysis: "Anaerobic/Lactate threshold" measurements - invasive/non-invasive ; heat stress and exercises.
B.Sc. (Speech & Hearing Sciences) - full time
  • Problem-based-learning (PBL) "skills laboratories" in anatomy and physiology.
