Sustainable City Competition and Study Tour to Singapore/Japan

In the past few years, HKUEAA has been promoting sustainable development (SD) in the society by having experiential projects for HKU engineering alumni and students to appreciate the examples of sustainable development outside Hong Kong and to help develop SD ideas for Hong Kong.
The theme of this year’s SD project is “Sustainable City – From Challenges to Way Out”. We aim to arouse interest of the engineering students and alumni on the latest development of sustainable city through a Sustainable City Competition, various workshops and a 4-5 days study tour to Singapore/Japan to nurture student’s leadership, problem solving skills and innovations. The details are as follows:
1. Sustainable City Competition
Students forming a group of 4 – 6 members to be the central policy unit of a city. The city is experiencing climate change, energy crisis and pollutions problems. They have to provide and present a sustainable, innovative and practical proposal to solve the problems and to achieve the required targets. Two rounds of competition will be conducted to select the Champion group.
Date: November 2009 - February 2010
Prize: Champion group will be given $3000 equivalent prize and be entitled to direct admission to the study tour to Japan/Singapore.

A briefing session will be held on 5 November 2009. Further details about the competition will be announced.
Participants are required to attend the technical seminars and workshops in November 2009 and February 2010 conducted by prominent engineers from leading engineering consultant firms and government department to have a better understanding on the topics.
2. Study Tour: Expedition to Singapore/Japan
Date: 22-26 May 2010 (Tentative)
No. of participants: around 15
Fee: Around $2,500 - 6,000 per head for alumni (transportation and meals cost inclusive)
Around $1,500 - 5,000 per head for full-time engineering students (transportation and meals cost inclusive)
Details of the study tour to be announced in 2nd Semester.

Application Deadline: 31 October 2009 18:00
Students who cannot form a group of at least 4 people can still submit the application form with less than 4 people first. HKUEAA will help you to facilitate the grouping process.
The judges of the competition are prominent engineers from the Government and large engineering consultant firms. It will be a precious opportunity for you to get exposed to engineering industries. Check your schedule and join this meaningful experiential project now!

2. Technical Seminar: Sustainable Engineering
Students are welcomed to join the technical seminar on sustainable engineering conducted by various professionals, e.g. Ir P K LEE – Technical Director, AECOM Asia Ltd, Ir C F LAM – Senior Environmental Protection Officer, EPD and more.
Date: 14 November 2009
Time: 9:00am – 12:00noon
Seats are limited and vacancies are given on a first-come-first serve basis. Priority would be given to the participants of the competition. Students would be informed by email for the venue.

It is always difficult to plan and set your goals especially when you are facing an unknown future. You may always worry about "What can I do after the financial tsunami", "Will I find a job during this stage of economic recovery?"
In order to guide you the way to the future successes, HKU Engineering Alumni Association (HKUEAA) and the Engineering Society will jointly organize a series of activities to let you "engineer" your career path. This includes 2 career talks and 3 company visits which are opened to all students in the Faculty of Engineering. Details of the functions are listed as follows:
Career Talks Series:
Experienced and knowledgeable alumni working at middle to senior positions of some renowned companies in Hong Kong will be invited to share their experiences and challenges in developing their careers. Students are welcome to seek advices from and have a discussion with these outstanding engineering alumni.

:: Sustainable Development Project 2009 – Infrastructure & Society
Technical Seminars and Study Tour to Taiwan
In the past few years, HKUEAA has been promoting sustainable development (SD) in the society by having experiential projects for HKU engineering alumni and students to appreciate the examples of sustainable development outside Hong Kong and to help develop SD ideas in the context of Hong Kong.
The theme of this year’s SD project is “Sustainable Development – Infrastructure & Society”. We aim to explore how infrastructural development, with emphases on Municipal Waste Incinerators and High Speed Rail, would influence the social, economical and environmental aspects of a society. The project will have two technical seminars, including practical appreciation of train operation at MTR, and a 4-day study tour to Taiwan. Details of the programme of the project is as follow:

Dance is an excellent form of exercise and rhythmic movements to music provide an effective workout without strain. In view of many opportunities for our engineering fellows to participate various social functions such as our coming annual ball on the 31st December, social dance is undoubtedly an important exercise to enhance not only our health but also our charm and sociability.

HKU Engineering Alumni Association (HKUEAA) always takes care of the development of our young generation in the Faculty of Engineering. As a tradition of HKUEAA to promote experience sharing and nurture our young generation, a new session of Graduate Mentor Scheme (GMS) will be organized in 2009.
GMS is a mentorship scheme jointly organized by HKUEAA and Engineering Society, HKUSU. With HKUEAA's extensive network of HKU Engineering alumni and friends, we gather a wealth of renowned and socially experienced mentors from all walks of life. Students can learn from the valuable experiences of mentors as well as establish and expand social network prior starting career. By matching students with mentors, the program successfully broaden student's horizon and richen student's knowledge in the past GMS.

HKU Engineering Alumni Association (HKUEAA) always takes care of the development of our young generation in the Faculty of Engineering.
In the academic year of 2008 – 2009, HKUEAA and Engineering Society, HKUSU will jointly organize three Career Talks and one sharing session on interview skills from which first to final year undergraduates and postgraduates can get career advices, latest information on all engineering disciplines and some useful interview tips from our experienced engineering alumni.
The three Career Talks cover all disciplines in the five Departments in Faculty of Engineering. The interview skill sharing session will be opened to all students in the Faculty of Engineering. Renowned and experienced alumni from different engineering sectors will be invited to share their experiences and give advices in the Career Talks and interview skill sharing session. Peak season for job-hunting / applications for internship and summer training is approaching. To help students in the Faculty of Engineering to prepare for different kinds of interviews, an Interview Skills Sharing Session is being organized.
